SAIGON 2007-10

  • Arranged, performed on, recorded and mixed Nothing Compares to You with Beatrice Rivera using a laptop, Cubase 5, virtual instruments and a keyboard. This is the pilot for a complete album which will be finished this year and hopefully released in the Philippines. CLICK START ARROW BELOW



  • Performed in, organised and managed all technical details for the following bands here in Saigon: Beatrice Rivera Trio, Timtiger and the European Union, and The Merchants of Groove, including all audio and video equipment, mixing, and recordings, as well as designing (using Photoshop) and printing posters and cards for venues.

  • We performed at Alibi, Centro, Skewers, River Café, Long Phi, Hoa Tuc, Vascos, Refinery, Long Phi, Xcream, and functions at Hyatt, Sheraton, Sofitel and private parties.
  • Performed in Marriott Associa Hotel Nagoya Japan July-Nov 2009 with Beatrice Rivera.
  • Use video extensively with students at VUS (a leading English training institute here in Saigon):
  • Video and train students to video role plays and Powerpoint presentation
  • Provide video clips and compilations of clips burnt to DVD or computer playable files as material for teaching and as a record for the students
  • I was the lead teacher of the VUS program Talk Right Presentations designed to train students to develop their presentation skills
  • Performed on and released a CD with Tran Manh Tuan (saxophone – Saxn’Art Club, Le Loi) entitled Body and Soul, available in CD shops throughout Vietnam. I was equally involved in the arrangement and technical aspects of this project, such as managing the tuning of the Steinway grand piano at the music conservatory, microphones, external sound card etc.
  • Continue to compose, arrange, mix and record music using keyboards, computer, virtual instruments, hard drives and external soundcards (audio interfaces).
  • NB: I started using MIDI recording techniques back in the ‘80s with an Atari 1mb computer and have continued ever since.

SEATTLE 2006-7


  • Produced and performed in a Concert Project: Beloved – the music of Gus Khan – composer of It Had to Be You etc with Steve Marx (grandson of Gus Khan and Groucho Marx) and Ellen Marx and Ray Price (Oscar Peterson’s and George Shearing’s drummer) - a benefit concert for a woman with cancer who has since passed – I recorded and produced audio and video for this, which was made available to the 200 or so guests.
  • Mastered Ev Stern’s (excellent bassplayer and jazzworkshop guru in Seattle) CD ESP (a jazz trio)

  • Performed in, recorded, mixed and produced CD’s and videos for my bands and others in Seattle 2006-7 at:

  • The Icehouse with Andrew Jr. Boy Jones (Texas Bluesman), Tracey Anita Baker (Chicago, bass), Kenny Coleman (Chicago, drums)

  • The Icehouse with James Wheeler (Chicago bluesman), Felton Crewes (Chicago bassist), and Kenny Coleman. Produced a video.

  • ESL teaching: used video extensively with self directed classes involving English Majors at Beijing Military College of Science of Technology

October 2005 CHINA - Hong Kong and Zhuhai:

  • Joyce Annual Fashion Show with Allen Youngblood and the band - pianist
  • Beijing Normal University Zhuhai: produced a 100 minute movie called 'Twelve Notes in the 20th Century' about the emergence of contemporary popular musics from jazz and blues back through to the cry of slaves, set in the 20th century global context, compiled from clips and stills, some comcam recording, etc, for a presentation to about 500 students in an auditorium. Produced flyers and promoted the show in advance.

May 1999 - August 2005 SOUTH KOREA

  • Club Palm Hong Dae Seoul - timtiger trio with Seo Hee (drums), Han Hyun-woo (bass) and special guests including Nam Goong Yeon.
  • All That Jazz, Once in a Blue Moon, Janus, Club Palm, Watercock, Naima, Just Blues clubs in Seoul with musicians: Elliot Kuykendall, JC Clark, Gary Harris, Woong San, Oh Su-ok, Cha Hyun, Jeong Malo, Chai (Choi Soo-young),
  • Zio Ricco Jinju and Giant Step Masan as solo pianist and band leader and Jinju City Bigband
  • Metallica Andong with Eugene Wheelehan (Melbourne guitar, drums and trumpet) and Dric (guitar) - performed original material composed and produced by me.
  • Andong University South Korea: composed a soundtrack, Warzone, a pilot track for a contemporary dance dealing with the advent and early days of the current Iraq War.


1994-99 SYDNEY AUSTRALIA:

  • Performed often with popular Australian singer Monica Trapaga in concert.
  • Casual gigs around Sydney
  • Taught advanced theory and improvisation at Australian Institute of Music Surry Hills for a semester
  • Pianist in Gaiety Swing Orchestra (bigband)
  • Recorded, mixed and produced a CD for some guys from Senegal Africa.
  • Composer, producer for River of Islands Dance work commissioned by the Australia Council, the NSW Arts Board and Albury Wodonga Development Corporation, performed by around 200 dancers from nine different communities on the Murray River, bordering New South Wales and Victoria, Australia. This was an unexpected hit for the locals, because, prior to the one night performance, contemporary dance was an enigma for them. But the night went like clockwork and some people even went out of the theatre crying, in a good way. The reviewer in the local paper gave us the thumbs up which was pretty well opposite to her previous rap before the show.

1991-4 HONG KONG

  • House pianist and composer at Hong Kong Jazz Club and Toscana Restaurant, Ritz Carlton Hotel, HK.
  • Pianist in weekly TV Talk show “Matt Hackett Show
  • Composed and produced corporate video soundtracks and advertising jingles for RCP (Robert Chua Productions).
  • Performed on, co-produced and engineered “Save the Tigers”, an album by Graham Earnshaw sponsored by the Body Shop HK.
  • Composed and produced the music for the contemporary dance work “The Kiss” (One World Theater Productions), performed at the Academy for Performing Arts, and the Fringe Club Theater HK.
  • Composed, produced and performed a solo show at HK Fringe Theater “The I Behind the Eyes”.
  • Composed, arranged and performed on “Whispers of the Soul” for HK pop star Prudence Liew. A Columbia record.
  • Arranged, performed and conducted strings for pop/TV star Danny Summer.
  • Played in Eugene Pao’s Electric Band performing regularly at the Jazz Club HK, touring to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur (with Eric Marienthal) International Jazz Festivals .
  • Performed with numerous icons: James Moody (Charlie Parker peer), Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea's Electric Band Saxophonist), Iain Bellamy (Mirrormask composer), Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown (Louisiana bluesman legend), Irene Reid (blues), Danny Moss (British tenor), Elvin Bishop (R&B etc, friend of Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones)), as well as engineering for John Hendricks (One of the lynchpins of jazz vocal harmony viz a vis Manhattan Transfer), and Mick Taylor, etc.
  • I often played solo piano as an opener for concerts at the Hong Kong Jazz Club. My first stint was for Archie Shepp Quartet.
  • Worked for Abercrombie and Kent on M.S. Bashan (cruiseship) on the Yangtze River as pianist/guide.
  • Taught music at South Island School.
  • Had my own teaching business called Keys for Fun in Wanchai.

ADELAIDE '80's:

  • Ran the lighting board at one stage in the ADELAIDE FRINGE FESTIVAL
  • Taught jazz piano performance and jazz history at SACAE (South Australian College of Advanced EducationDance
  • accompanist: Australian Dance Theatre, CPA, SACAE Madley Dance Space.
  • Composed, arranged, mixed and recorded many scores for contemporary dance and film students’ films.
  • Co-formed and composed for an original band Empty Vessels, co-formed The Hyphen Smith Band, a funk band that gigged every week around Adelaide for years.
  • Performed in many hotels including the Hilton, Hyatt, and Adelaide Casino as solo pianist and band member. I often used MIDI equipment and was responsible for the audio.
  • Committee member of the Jazz Action Society and presented a weekly jazz radio show on 5MMM for them, as well as organizing sound reinforcement and being the sound engineer for their concerts.
  • Formed and led ‘The Scat Cats’, a jazz band that performed every Sunday at Maylands Hotel.
  • Studied and completed my degree in Jazz Performance and Composition at South Australian College of Advanced Education.
  • Taught theory and harmony and performed administrative and technical duties at CASM (Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music) the birthplace of famous Aboriginal bands No Fixed Address and Us Mob.
